TRINITY

My body began to shake, and I clenched every muscle, attempting to hide my visceral reaction. The pain that still lingered was slowly getting better, but having Jarrett standing in front of me caused nothing but agony.

I swallowed the words as they fluttered through my mind. I wouldn’t ever beg this sonofabitch for anything, even if it was to get him out of my personal space. The part of me that had still held out hope that he cared enough about me to at the very least text and let me know what was going on with him—that he had an explanation for everything, he just needed time—had disappeared the night I’d woken up in so much pain it was a wonder I’d been able to walk out to the Uber I’d called to take me to the hospital.

Two days. I’d only been two days away from having the scheduled procedure Dr. Murray would have performed to close my open cervix. But out of nowhere, an infection had set in. It had been quick and attacked everything, including the baby and one of my ovaries. Dawn had been breaking as I’d been rushed into surgery to do a hysterectomy that had cost me everything except one ovary.

Dr. Murray hadn’t been sure what he was going to find when he first opened me up, in such a hurry to get in there that he’d opened me up completely instead of doing it laparoscopically. I had a scar across my bikini line, the only visual reminder of what I could have had, but now never would.

The baby I’d wanted so desperately was gone, and I had no chance of having another one.

At least with one ovary remaining, I wasn’t thrown into full menopause. The doctor had been relieved about that, but I couldn’t think about that small miracle when I’d lost so much.

In a moment of weakness, as the anesthesia had started to fade, I’d tried to call Jarrett. Needing to hear his voice, to share with him my loss—our loss. Being told he was in the Bahamas with his family had shattered what was left of my heart, and I’d hung up feeling completely numb.

But while my emotions were muted, I’d had to figure out what to tell my parents as well as the world in general if they found out why I’d been in the hospital. And although it had been a life-saving surgery, it was still labeled as an abortion. The only person who knew, other than the medical staff at Cedars-Sinai, was Mieke. I’d called her, begged her to do whatever she could to keep anyone who went looking from accessing my files. As payment, I’d had to tell her everything, but I trusted her to take my secrets to the grave. She was family, even if we didn’t share a blood connection.
